Welcome to
our RMMV Athlone Castle website
celebrating this stylish and beautiful motorship. She was built by
Harland & Wolff in Belfast for Union-Castle Line. In 1938, under
the terms of the 1936 mail contract, with the Stirling Castle she
introduced the accelerated service taking 14 days. During the
Second World War she gave distinguished service all over the world as a
troopship. In 1946 she returned to service on the mail run and
continued in loyal service until 1965 when she was retired by
Union-Castle Line. She was sold for scrap and sailed to Kaoshiung in
Taiwan for dismantling, a sad end for a much loved and stylish ship. This
website aims to record the history of this fine British ocean liner and
act as
a virtual home to honour and commemorate this fine ship. We hope you
enjoy this
website and when you leave we hope you will visit again soon.
