Welcome to our La Marseillaise website celebrating this remarkable ship. The Second World War was devastating for the world and many shipping lines lost ships to the war effort. Messageries Maritimes, based in Marseilles, and operating on the route to East Asia was no exception.

The same year as the war erupted, they had started construction on a ship. But as the war slowed work down, the ship was not launched until 1944, during the war. The name for the ship used during the launching ceremonies was Maréchal Pétain. Delayed by the war she was completed in 1949, during this time, the ship had been renamed La Marseillaise. At 17,000 gross tons, La Marseillaise was not a very impressive ship, compared with the great transatlantic liners, but she was still the largest French ship to enter service since 1939.
