OLYMPIA 1953

RETURN TO THE HOMEPAGE                                                                                                                                                                                                                              THE OCEAN LINERS

Welcome to our website paying tribute to the S/S Olympia, the first and last newbuild ocean liner built for Greek Line. She was also the largest ocean liner built for Greek interests at the time. She was built in 1953 by Alexander Stephen & Sons, Glasgow, Scotland, UK. She was designed to operate regular transatlantic voyages from Piraeus to New York, although later from 1961 she became a seasonal cruise ship. In 1970 with competition from air travel she became a full time cruise ship, however sadly in 1974 Greek Line collapsed and ceased operations and the Olympia was laid up at Piraeus. Since then she has sailed for a variety of operators as a successful cruise ship. Today since 2004 the former Olympia has operated Caribbean cruises for Imperial Majesty Cruise Lines as Regal Empress.

Once her active seagoing career ends (possibly in 2010), there is interest from the Greek Government to preserve her at Piraeus as a museum ship once she is retired from service. Alternatively she could find a home in London as a hotel ship. If opened in time as a hotel ship she could also cater for the 2012 Olympic Games. So hopefully she will be preserved and thus continue to inspire present and future generations for many years to come as the only Greek ocean liner.

This website aims to record the history of this famous Greek ocean liner and act as a virtual home to honour and commemorate this fine ship. We hope you enjoy this website and when you leave we hope you will visit again soon.
